Students in TK through 8th grade enjoy using the STEM lab on a regular basis. In addition to experiments and simulations, digital design is introduced in 4th grade, from California Missions to Life Science Body Systems. These designs can be printed on the 3-D printers available in the STEM Lab. Middle school students use this design to support social studies, designing historic buildings that are then printed in the lab. Students in grades TK to 5 also spend at least 30 minutes a week in coding. St. John School uses the app Kodable which begins with lessons on sequence, conditions, loops, and functions. The students use additional apps to enhance their coding lessons. Middle School students further their coding experience through code.org and other apps. The lab also includes a Collaborative Universal Robot – donated by Buchanan Automation – which Middle School students are taught to program and use. The students also get to apply this knowledge in programming in our after school Robotics Program. Currently there are 10 different robots for different skill levels. Grade 5 experiences building a robot and programming using an Arduino board. Robotics is open to students in K through 8. The clubs meet once a week to build, program, and complete challenges with the robots.
The school choir consists of over 70 students from 2nd through 8th grade who participate in different school, church, and civic events throughout the year. The school choir is committed to serving St. John the Baptist Church parish community one Sunday a month during 10:00 am Mass. Through choir, students learn music, leadership, teamwork, and more while providing service and song for their community.
Art Enrichment class gives students from K-8 the opportunity to learn and create using different artistic styles and mediums.
In Knights Coders club, students learn to code front-end web development using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. Toward the end of the course, students implement the front-end part of a mini-Instagram replica application.
After school robotics sessions offer students from K-8 opportunities to work with 10 different robots according to student skill levels, applying and further developing their knowledge of coding. Older students may also take part in robotics competitions.
The athletics program for league sports is available for 5th-8th grade boys and girls. The following sports are offered during the school year: Boys Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, and Co-Ed Track and Field. Students from grades 1-4 may participate in Junior Knights intramural basketball in the spring.
